Elounda - Crete

Lasithi prefecture is the Eastern department of Crete and seperated in 8 Municipalities: 1) Saint Nikolaos, 2) Ierapetras, 3) Sitia, 4) Neapolis, 5) Plateau Lasithi, 6) Long Seashore, 7) Leykis and Itanoy. Cretan, Liviko and Carpathian are the sea that "embrace" Lasithi. The capital of Lasithi perefecture is the graphic Saint Nikolaos.

Elounda is 5 kilometres away from Agios Nikolaos. The area is known for its small rocky gulfs that form many small "private" beaches along its coasts. The village of Elounda is right next to the sea and has a magnificent overview to the gulf of Elounda and Spinalonga. During the summer, this is where the small boats start their trip going to the island of Spinalonga, where the Venetians had built a powerful fortress. When the sea is calm, one can take a look at the Ancient city of Olounda.
During the ancient times, a big part of the city had sunk and whatever was left over had gradually been destroyed. Today, Elounda has the Upper and the Lower Elounda, the Upper and Lower Pines, and the Maurician. The more developed part however is the lower Elounda. The visitors can take a swim in the beach of Elounda, which is organized to satisfy most of the visitors' needs. They can also enjoy swimming in any of the beaches with the crystal clear waters, which are being awarded with the Blue Flag in a yearly basis.

There are so many things one can say about Elounda but hard for one to describe it. This is the place that you need to see and live it and then... dream of it!
